Stop & Shop in Newton closing

Stop & Shop is closing its 165 Needham Street location in Newton, as part of a larger plan to close 32 stores companywide.

The stores are expected to close by Nov. 2, according to a statement by the company.

“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in that statement Friday. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”

Employees at the closing stores will be offered positions at other locations, the company’s statement notes.

The grocery store giant, which currently has 400 stores throughout New England, New York and New Jersey, was launched in Somerville in 1914.
