PHOTOS: Newtonville Village Day sends off September in style

Newtonville held its Village Day on Sunday, closing out the warm months with a block party and a couple thousand guests.

Crowds lined Walnut Street to enjoy food, mingle with neighbors and celebrate Newtonville’s vibrant neighborhoods. There were hot dogs from Mochiko Hawaiian, empanadas from Che Empanadas and a large celebratory cake cut by the mayor (with help from City Councilor David Micley’s daughter, Zoe, who turned 4 on Sunday).

There was also a train giving free rides up and down the street to add to the family fun.

“Isn’t it great? We need this so much!” Mayor Ruthanne Fuller cheered as she spoke to the crowd before cutting the cake. “Of course it’s an amazing village, and it’s been redone and invested in a lot, but what matters most here, of course, are the people.”

Village Days take a lot of work to organize, Newtonville Area Council President Jennifer Bentley said.

“It takes a village,” Bentley joked. “We start planning well before the summer months.”
