Massachusetts primary: Who won, and how Newton voted

Newton voters voting.

Massachusetts voters picked their nominees for a variety of state-level and federal offices on Tuesday (minus president—we did that in the March primary).

There weren’t a lot of contested races in Massachusetts, but Newton had a few. And one of Newton’s races for state representative had no Republican candidates so the Democratic wins in November.

Here’s who won and how Newton voted in each competitive race:

11th Middlesex

In the Democratic primary for the 11th Middlesex state representative seat, former Newton City Councilor Amy Sangiolo defeated financial auditor Alex Jablon, 83% to 17%.

In Newton, the results were the same as the total because Newton is the only city in the 11th Middlesex district.

“I am honored and thrilled to be the Democratic nominee for state representative for the 11th Middlesex District,” Sangiolo said after her victory. “The enthusiasm, trust, and commitment from my supporters have been humbling and inspiring. I am grateful to my family, staff, volunteers, friends, and students for their support and dedication. Together, we knocked on thousands of doors throughout the district and listened to the priorities expressed by residents to build our shared vision for Massachusetts.”

Sangiolo will face off against Republican Vladislav Yanovsky (who did not have a primary opponent) in the November general election.

Sangiolo had some encouraging words for her Jablon, who ran his first race ever and did so in a tumultuous political era.

“I thank my opponent, Alex Jablon, for running a great campaign focused on the issues,” she said. “He has a great future ahead of him. As we move towards the general election, I am more committed than ever to advocating for the priorities discussed throughout this campaign. I hope Newton voters will continue to stay engaged, share their thoughts, and help keep our momentum going. I look forward to the opportunity to work together to build a brighter future for our community.”

12th Middlesex

In the 12th Middlesex state representative race, former Newton City Councilor Greg Schwartz won 39.9% of the vote district-wide, beating current city councilors Bill Humphrey (30.4%) and Rick Lipof (29.7%).

That district includes a part of Brookline. On the votes cast in Newton, the results were almost the same. Schwartz got 39.2% (2963 votes), Humphrey got 29.8% (2257 votes) and Lipof got 28.5% (2157 votes). They each added some padding to their vote counts in Brookline, with Lipof seeing the most help from Brookline despite coming in third in the overall district race.

Governor’s Council

In the Democratic primary for the Third District Governor’s Council seat, public defender Mara Dolan unseated incumbent Marilyn Petitto Devaney, 52.2% to 47.8%.

In Newton—the district’s largest community—Dolan garnered about 42% (6,237 votes) compared with Petitto Devaney’s 40.2% (6,003 votes).

In that race, there were 2,137 blanks, making up about 14 percent of the ballots cast.

Dolan’s victory is especially noteworthy, as she defeated a 25-year incumbent for the seat in a rematch just two years after the two faced off and Dolan lost by less than half a percentage point.

“We did it!” Dolan posted on X (formerly Twitter) early Wednesday morning after the race was called.

U.S. Senate

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, didn’t face a primary challenger, but the Republicans had one to pick a candidate to run against her this fall.

Attorney John Deaton won a decisive victory with 64.9%, towering over Robert Antonellis (25.9%) and Ian Cain (9.1%).

In Newton, Deaton won 836 votes, Antonellis got 425 votes, and Ian received Cain received 152 votes (57.7%, 29.3% and 10.4%, respectively).

The general election will be Nov. 5.
