'Selfie Stations' show Newton's art and culture, one smile at a time

You may have noticed art displays around town this summer that are screaming for a selfie. And that’s why they’re there.

Last month, Newton Community Pride launched its new summer public art initiative, #PictureUsNewton, for which 12 colorfully decorated selfie stations designed by local and regional artists were installed around the city.

People are encouraged to take selfies in front of these displays and upload the images to the community photo album. The goal is to show, through art and faces, Newton’s diversity and unique community.

“NCP is very excited to bring joy and creativity to our city with this new public art project,” Dinny Starr, chair of #PictureUsNewton and board member of Newton Community Pride, said. “We hope the public will engage with these beautiful and unique pieces of art and help us create a wonderful online album that showcases our community.”

And the project has taken off. A bunch of Newtonians, including the mayor and a few City Council members, have already posted their own selfies.

The displays are temporary. They will be up through October, though, so you can enjoy them for fall photos, too.
