Davenport moves out of Newton, resigns from School Committee

There was an empty seat at Monday night’s School Committee meeting.

Ward 7 School Committee member Amy Davenport has moved out of Newton, so she had to resign from her seat (members have to live in the district).

Davenport was elected to the seat last year.

“Amy was a great asset to the committee, being an educator and principal of Westwood High School for the short time she was here,” Chair Chris Brezski said at the meeting.

The committee will have eight members until the city can have a special election to fill the Ward 7 seat. Brezski said he spoke with city clerk staff and was told that special election will likely be in early 2025.

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, who sits on the School Committee, said that the clerk’s office is busy with the November election and then the holiday season arrives, and that’s why there can’t be a special election sooner.
