Five things to do in Newton this weekend

In 1894, after decades of workers pushing back over deplorable working conditions, President Grover Cleveland signed a law declaring Labor Day a national holiday.

And 130 years later, we still enjoy a nice long weekend to savor the end of summer.

Here are five things to do this weekend.

Friday, Aug. 30

From 6 to 10 p.m., The Hyde Center will host its final Summer in the Highlands Concert & a Movie event of the season, with Boston Rock and Soul Revue and a showing of the movie “Kung Fu Panda 4.” Boston Rock and Soul Revue is a Boston-based band that has performed across New England and specializes in funk and electric rhythm, so you may feel inspired to dance.

From 9 to 11:30 p.m., Biltmore will host Karaoke. So if the dancing didn’t do enough for you, you can try out singing.

Saturday, Aug. 31

From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the city will have its Saturday Farmers Market at Newton North High School.

Sunday, Sept. 1

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can tour the Jackson Homestead for free. The Jackson Homestead and Museum has exhibits detailing Newton’s history and the Underground Railroad.

At 2 p.m., Boston Marriott Newton will host a performance of “Crossing Over” by psychic/medium John Edward.
